Water Quality Jan 2015 |
24.1.15 Report received : "Water relatively pure presently. The pipes from the dam and within the town are badly damaged. The water is wasting. We have started experiencing shortage of water in some parts of the town. Most times, particles like dry leaves do come from the tap. Recommendation work on reservoir for the town to get pure water, and also wiremesh for the dam to be covered (Comments from: Musa Mondeh, Alex Fanday & Sahr Bamba). The main pipe from the dam has a leakage somewhere close to the town, will need to confirm if mesh has been removed"
14 February Report received: "The main pipe to the dam needs maintenance if the town is not to have a water shortage during the dry season. The dam needs to be cleaned."
12 March Report received: "Preparations are going on for the reopening of schools. The Ebola CCC at the secondary school has been relocated to the back of the Health Centre at the other end of town to pave way for schools reopening."
2 April Report received: "The water system is very poor. The taps cannot run during the day time and only a few during the night. No rain yet. The water that comes brings so many particles. Regarding the reopening of schools, the BECE exams that were postponed due to ebola have commenced this past Monday and general reopening of schools will be the second week in April".

15 March 2016 Locals in Kayima are reminding me about the multiple leaks in the high pressure 6" water supply pipes from the gravity fed dam that supplies Kayima. Check out this link posted Feb-April 2015: http://sahrfasuluku.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/part-6-kayima-gravity-fed-water-supply.html .
ReplyDeleteThe pipes are iron and over 60 years old. I have researched their availability - they are available in UK and elsewhere. Also the dam wheel gate valve is available in UK for around Le1,600,000 (£278) plus shipping (The one in there dates from the fifties and is seized open, so it cant close.)
6" High pressure cement lined water supply pipes will be very expensive to replace but will be an inevitability as more and more leaks spring up in coming years.Ive asked for quotations from a factory/distributor in the UK but haven't received a response yet.
As a short to medium term alternative there are high pressure repair kits to seal such holes. Each kit repairs a single hole in a high pressure 6" pipe. The cheapest repair kit I have found is in USA for Le 220,000 ($55) per hole able to take pressures up to 300psi once set. I'm still looking for cheaper of the same quality.
There may be corrosion inside the pipe but the only method is to remove each pipe and grind inside the pipes.
The suggestion coming from kayima is that they use cement to somehow surround and seal each hole. I raised concerns about cement blocking the pipes, but apparently its been tried before and has worked.
The question now is, is anyone prepared to contribute towards either;
1. 6" iron cement-lined high pressure water supply pipes, or
2. the gate valve
3. High pressure repair kits $55 per hole
4. local solution with cement ?
Please let me know as Dian and I can be there to carry out some repairs work this Easter with two of our boys if we can get a last minute affordable ticket.
We always talk about doing something for back home, here's our chance to make a difference and help water security for Kayima.
